Although there are a number of third-level institutions in Ireland that offer courses in cultural studies, there are none that operate from within a specific community base and that can offer specialised studies of the culture of that community. The unique and innovative underpinning philosophy of OaC will enable the student to gain a deeper insight into cultural/traditional practice as a whole by working from the concrete examples of the locality first. As has been stressed, Clare is an area of special relevance to those with an interest in indigenous Irish culture. The success of the Willie Clancy Summer School, which has been running continuously for over thirty three years, and the Clare Festival for Traditional Singing, are clear indications of the depth and sustainability of this interest.
